As a child, instead of being content with a story at bedtime, Katey wanted her dad, Greg, to sing her a song. Greg chose a Frank Sinatra song titled “Strangers In The Night”. Katey would ask for the song to be sung over and over again with Greg jazzing up every version. Greg had already noticed how "pitch perfect" Katey was when she sang and one night, during one of his many versions of “Strangers” Katey stopped him and told him that his pitch was not quite correct. And then proceeded to demonstrate how it should be sung. Picking himself up from the floor after this young whipper snapper actually told him he wasn’t singing correctly, Greg knew that here, indeed, was a talent and decided to find people that could help nurture Katey’s talent.
Not an easy task. But, through perseverance Greg, and wife Jacky, found the right people. Jumping ahead to age 18, in 2008, Greg & Jacky arranged for Katey to attend a vocal seminar in Bel Air, California. There she met music industry representatives who recognised her talent and invited her to return to the USA to begin developing her career as a recording artist. This was very exciting news all round…. or so Greg & Jacky thought. During her stay in the US, one of the executives at the seminar had a long talk to Katey and really put her in the picture of what to expect once signed to a label. Basically, she was told, her life would not be her own – she would be on tour a lot, she would be expected to be available to the press whenever required, she would have to move to the US and her life would be public property. During the last few days in the US, and also on the long journey home, she agonised over what she really wanted and came to the conclusion that she wanted to enjoy a “normal” life until she was ready to make a commitment.
Katey has since embarked on other ventures but music is her love. She still writes and performs and is recognised for her great talent, resulting in being asked to perform in special events such as the 2009 Gold Coast SuperGP. And, the love for Jazz and Swing is firmly embedded in her soul............ she now performs with her dad..........
